New Year, new erm...?Posted on Sunday 6 January 2008 at 08:51 - Post CommentHello 2008! So *that's* where you've been hiding?! New Year for us passed in a bit of a blur of work, MSN video calls back to the UK, phone calls to all and sundry, and a BBQ with friends. It was actually much better than anticipated - we met some new folks, and enjoyed a few drinks and a giggle with them.
Resolutions for 2008? To be honest, neither of us have bothered. It'll be enough for us to:
Get the UK house sold Get residency here in NZ T to get a permanent job
Icing on the cake would be to build our house in Rolleston, so we certainly have some goals to move towards throughout the year ahead.
The last week has been a real easy one for us both, and almost a little holiday in itself. Monday saw me at 'work' if you can call it that. 4 phone calls all day led to not much actually getting done which is hardly surprising. That evening was New Years Eve which passed off well enough, and New Years day was a lovely sunny one which saw me go off Mountain Biking with 2 other folks off the British Expats forum.
We cycled up the Port Hills just to the South of ChCh city, and then - just like The Grand Old Duke of York - we cycled back down again. I managed to fall off a total of four times, all at less than walking speed, but overall it was a great way to begin the new year. I have just done the same route again today, and this time without stopping. It was bloody hard work, but I made it and was well proud of myself.
New years here gives us all 2 public holidays - Jan 1st AND Jan 2nd, and so we enjoyed the etra time away from doing - well anything actually - as we spent all day just watching the goggle box and doing little else. Ahhhhhh... bliss.
Then Thurs and Fri saw me back at work, but again it was very quiet with just a few phone calls and jobs to fill. The days flew by and we then had another two days off. Nice! On Friday evening T went out with some friends for a meal, so I invited Hayden and his Playstation 2 over for a video game session. 6 hrs later we were still at it, but it was getting silly as I was nearly playing whilst asleep, and my thumbs felt like they no longer belonged to my hands. Most weird!
On Saturday we did some shopping and stuff, and then just relaxed at home - doing all the boring chores that I never seemed to have to do when I lived with my parents. We have finally realised that we are just rubbish at all this keeping house malarky. Apparently, one of the best points of a manager, is to realise when they are bad at something and pass that task on to someone who is good at it. So, as joint house managers, we are thinking of getting a cleaner in. Problem solved.
Today (Sunday) has been a great one as after my moutainbiking exploits we headed off to the beach for me to get in some much needed swimming practice. This Mini-Triatholon thing is actually on the 20th of this month (I previously thought it was on the 30th!) and so I have a mere 15 days to see if I am capable of swimming 250m, cycling 20kms, then running another 4kms. Sea swimming is bloody hard work, as I found out today. I tried to front crawl for 100m or so, and was knackered after about 10m. Gawd knows how I'm going to do 250m! Better get to the swimming pool this week and found out I suppose.
Only a short one today, but enough to wish you all a Happy new Year and to hope that 2008 brings you all that your heart desires. Good luck!
