Funny FruitPosted on Friday 25 May 2007 at 03:52 - Post Comment
Being on the other side of the world from the UK means that there are loads of things that are 'same same but different', as they say in Vietnam.
Take the fruit and vegies for example. Around the corner from where I work is a fantastic fruit and veggie shop called The Funky Pumpkin, which basically takes the place of your UK fruit stall in a market.
They knock out whatever is in season dirt cheap, and always have a great range of local produce for loads less $$$'s than the supermarkets. So today I took a few shots of some of the things I've never seen before, to share with you folks back home.
First up, your humble fruit, the Persimmon. No idea what these taste like as I'm yet to try one, but they look a bit weird so that has put me off up to now. Maybe I'll get all adventurous next week - who knows!
Then you have your fruit of much weirdness, the Fejoia. these look like mini-avocados, but smell and taste freakish! Kind of a sweet, sour and chemical taste all at the same time. They make T want to heave, but I love 'em!
Once I've sliced it, the inside is just as uninspiring:
Moving swiftly on, there are (unsurprisingly) a whole bunch of these:
Even loads of different varieties and stuff. Then we come to the Kumara. These are sweet potatoes, and come in bronze, white and pink colours. Have yet to notice a taste difference - they are all good. They also grow in all sorts of funny shapes and sizes and a decent alternative to the humble spud us Brits know so well. So far, the best receipeI've found is to simply stick one in the oven for an hour or so, split it open and season, then bung on some sour cream and devour. Nice!
Finally we have a little bit of weirdness - the Yam:
I have to say, I was a bit stumped on first seeing these. they came into season a few weeks ago, and in the end I just had to ask what you did with them. Apparently, these veggies are roasted and then peeled or something. Just look plain odd to me - maybe I'll try these on the same day that the Persimmons get a look in.
Oh, and just in case you're wondering - yes, I did look like a complete prat wandering around taking pictures of fruit and stuff. But, you know, if I find it interesting I thought someone else out there might. Anyone...? No...? Just me then, eh?
I'll get my coat. |
