Thursday, September 22, 2005 - The Recruiter meets wee baldy man

Received a telephone call from a recruiter yesterday. Not holding much hope as it took me at least four times to explain what I did in my last postion, which was an International manager for agents and distributors for a military power conversion OEM.

After going through my responsibilities in more depth, he replied "So it's I.T then basically?".

I explained it's definitely not I.T,  as I wouldn't want to mislead any potential hiring managers. He explained that he had an I.T degree and he knows all about that stuff etc, again I reinforced it's not I.T, it's electronics.

I think I went on to explain it a couple more times when he rambled on about I.T again............

He then asked about my background and started to further disagree with me, was I sure I wasn't Australian and not English as I claimed?? I calmly explained that I've been in the States for 18 years, so perhaps my accent has took on some American intonation, not to mention that there are lots of different dialects in the UK.

Finally he asked about my salary history, suggesting that I take over a 50% pay cut due to the economy, but I would be able to make the short salary up with commision, perhaps earning $200,000 - $300,000 in bonus and commision.

Right I thought, I better be selling stinger missiles or Rolls-Royces to the Saudi royal family, and further pondered why he would be talking to me instead of earning hundreds of thousands in commision himself ( since he also had a sales background).

I'm waiting for the phone to start ringing off the hook......................... probably from people looking for I.T managers!

And finally Cyril, I came across  ' wee baldy man' from the Hamlet cigar ads. in the UK about 20 years ago.

Still as funny as hell to watch.
