Thursday, September 15, 2005 - All the fun of the fair

Clockwise from top left: Lazy gits, Elina & James, Clydesdale, feeding zoo.

Went to the Los Angeles County Fair yesterday, had a great time, highly recommended as it really is a fun family day out ( Did I really just write that?).

Primarily we went so our son could see some animals, they had a whole farming and livestock section where he got to walk in a pen of sheep and goats while feeding them, they were quite aggresive, they will mill around you in a pack and jump on your shoulders to get to the food,  were lucky to escape with or lives and not get trampled by a few hungry goats. All in all he enjoyed it and got to see sheep, cows, goats, horses, various hens, emus, lizards, staring in wide eyed amazement at the cow taking a poo and pee.

I was struck by the stark contrast of some of the farming people we met. I had a chat with 2 particular ladies who farmed goats in Riverside, I couldn't help but make a mental note of their down to earth, working appearance as opposed to the well-groomed, phoney, pampered Gucci clad women who abound in our trendy neighberhood. It made a refreshing change from the " Hi, how are YOOOOUUUU!!!( while giving fake French kisses) crowd.

The theme of the LA county fair is ' Pig out  at the fair'. I was quite astounded at the amount of fat people driving around in these electric cart vehicles, now the majority of these people were not clinically obese, just fat lazy gits that were too lazy to walk. You could rent these vehicles at the entrance and drive yourself around the fair all day with no danger of actually walking, whilst sampling high calorie food, such as deep fried Twinkies( a little cream cake), deep fried avacado and deep fried anything really. There seemed to be as many fatties in these carts as children in strollers, I captured a pic of 2 gorging themselves with fair fayre( probably deep fried no doubt).

Anheuser-Busch( the maker of Budweiser beer) had their Clydesdale horses from the TV advertisements on display, truely magnificent animals, although I did feel sorry for them as they were in cages no bigger than about 12' X 12'. I would have thought a racehorse would be a more suitable symbol for this brewery, as the affect drinking their beer has on me is making me piss like one??

When we got home I was releived we had shrimp for dinner that evening, not sure when I will be able to eat meat again after petting and feeding the livestock animals up-close?!?!
