Why Nova Scotia

One question I was always asked as a newly landed immigrant to Canada was, “So why Nova Scotia”? In fact, I still get asked that after 4 years, every time I meet someone new. The problem is where to start! When we first visited Nova Scotia in 2007 to do our reccie, what struck us the most was how comfortable we felt here. There was a real warmness here. It wasn’t just the friendly Maritimers, it was the place itself. It felt like home. Not at all like we had just travelled 3000+ miles to an unfamiliar country. At that point, the only thing that felt unfamiliar to us was the currency and driving on the wrong side of the road! The scenery, the beautiful coastline, the lakes, the trees, all of which we had seen online but there’s nothing like experiencing it for yourself. The weather, the four seasons. There aren’t too many places where you get proper spring, summer, fall and winter. We spend our summer days on the beach and our winter days playing (shovelling!) in the snow. We swim in the lakes in the summer and skate on them in the winter. Spring is lovely as you watch everything turn green again, and fall, with its vibrant colours is quite simply stunning. Everything moves at a slower place here. That takes a bit of adjustment when you are so used to the ‘I want it yesterday’ mentality! Our work/life balance is actually balanced! The houses are bigger and there is so much space. It’s without doubt a much safer place to raise your children. There are less than a million people in our wonderful province and it’s not that much smaller than England…..I could go on, and on…….and on. In a nutshell, we knew Nova Scotia could provide us with a better quality of life and a world of opportunities for us and our children. So far so good. That’s why we chose Nova Scotia…..
