Whelbourns in Canada

• Saturday 26 January 2008 - Living in the Freezer, put your Vest On and Pub Night!

OK, if you live in the North of prairie provinces, or way up North in the Territories, Nunavut or Labrador it has be bloody cold up there. We in Atlantic Canada have been having our share of the deep freeze weather this past week.

Most of the week the day time high temperature as been in the minus teens which means in the mornings it is -25c ish with a wind chill taking down to -33c, Brrr a little chilly. But with beautiful bright blue skies and almost blinding sun.

Every night the temperature has been down in the low or is that high -20c's (-25c to -30c) we just fire up the woodstove (well it has been burning all week long) and the house stays around +20c until about 5am when it drops to around +18c. I am amazed at the efficiency of the woodstove and how little amount of ash is created. We burned coal when we lived in Mansfield UK and it was a constant pain emptying the ash.

.

But everyone  just gets on with life (you have no choice of course). We wear layers of clothes so once indoors you can unpeel as you warm up. We wear hats and scarves (yep your dad was right, you will catch your death if you don't wear a scarf and your mum was also right about wearing vests).

.

Gemma has been sitting exams all week and being very studious, revising and behaving slightly nervous but quietly confident. She is lining up her options for University and this week it is back to science and perhaps a veterinary doctor (horses of course).

.

An eery quiet descended on the house last night as Kathryn flew off to the UK to visit her boyfriend Chris (not the snowman, and the naming of the snowman Chris  was pure coincidence ). If you have been following my blog you will know that they have opted for a week in Wales. Yes those were my thoughts entirely!

.

Tango went well we have reached the point where we seem to look like we know what we are doing, I need to stop looking in Julie's eyes, apparently I should be looking aloof and over her shoulder. (I don't think I have ever been aloof ... a fool occasionally but never a loof ). This weekend could be a challenge with my boss to worker ratio down. The two bosses are lining up work for me. (Ha you thought I was the boss didn't you!). I will see if I can distract them with a snow shoe expedition...

.

One bright spark is tonight is Pub Night! Our Newcomers club meets on the last saturday of the month at the Lunar Rogue Pub in Fredericton for a drink or two. So if you are in Fredericton tonight 8pm at the Lunar Rogue you can tell us we are the loud English accents sitting at the back of the pub. I will put an empty wine bottle on the table with a wooden spoon in it.

• Sunday 27 January 2008 - Wales in winter? Are they quite mad?

My parents live there and said on the phone that they have just now seen the sun for the first time in 10 days. Ah well, I doubt they're there for the scenery.
