In Sandra's very own words, "Wow wow wow". Australia Day, our first, was amazing.Started off at a bbq in a park in Collaroy, on the beach. There was a game of cricket going on in the middle, if the ball came your way, and you caught it, you were in to bat. Everyone in the whole park joining in, young lads, old people, kids, the works. Someone hit a six, straight into a small groups dinners. They tried to knick the ball cos their chips got squashed . The whole park just shouted "Get over it", "It's Australia Day". No fights, no bad blood, just a lovely atmosphere. I can remember when it was like that in the UK.........So, I wait 2 hours for a catch, then there it is. An attempted six. Its coming for me ! My chance to restore some English pride and despatch an Aussie from the crease. I am gonna get it, this ball is mine. Here it comes, watching it all the way, it's gonna be a dive, but well catchable. No, before I continue the story, a disclaimer. I had had 5 beers by this point. The ball I was going for, may well have been the right one, of the three I could see, I was sure it was. So, I dive, I must have it. Erm, I dont. The whole park erupts in laughter, my only retorte was to get up brush myself off and say, "Well, that's what you get for putting a pom in to field". Everyone laughed, and one Aussie said "We could tell you were a pom by the way you flapped your arms". I cant remember the last time in the UK I felt at home, and 2 months in here, in the middle of a park full of non-English, I felt more at home than ever. What a great country this is. Next, we went into town, to Darling Harbour. The place is stunning anyway, but with the fireworks, it was just amazing. People waving Aussie flags, all cheering the fireworks, a real sense of national identity. The speech that went with the fireworks was all about being Australian. Love Australia, be part of a united country. That is why we moved here, and it was quite emotional to stand there and be part of it. Everyone got drunk, there were no fights, and people talked to people they did not know all night. OK, we got turfed from one bar for not having ID, can you believe that ! Oz is not perfect then it seems, but it's pretty damn close.
