More faunaPosted on Sat 14 October 2006 at 03:47Not so pleased with the fauna today - I was pottering about deadheading and tidying up in the garden this morning in my bare feet when I stood on what I think was a bee. Oh my God it hurt!! Why I ididn't look at it when I pulled it out of my foot I don't know - maybe I was afraid of what I would find! It left a bloody big stinger and it was sore for ages, so gone off the great outdoors for a while!
Talking of the great outdoors, am I right in thinking that mothballs will stop cats crapping in the garden. And if so, why so? Do they come along dying for a poop in the border and see this white ball and get so wrapped up in thinking 'what the hell is that', that they saunter off deep in thought intending to look it up on the internet and completely forget to attend to their bodily functions? If anyone knows the answer to this inponderable mystery, please let me know. They sell them here (mothballs, not cat poo), so I have indeed bought some and scattered them about as our garden seems to be Poo Central at the moment.
I think I have missed a bit of the house-hunting story out. We saw one really beautiful house from the outside only, it had a brilliant write up (don't they all?) on the estate agent's blurb - spacious decking, double garage, three bedroom, office, modern etc. But once we actually got to look round inside, it was very odd. The garage had in fact been carpeted and used as a bedroom! So you have this huge space that must be freezing in the winter as there was no heating, but you wouldn't want to park a car on the carpet, would you? A bedroom with a roll up door...hmmmm. And there were 3 bedrooms right enough, but no office. It had a nice kitchen area but the rest of the house looked a bit dingy - grass growing in the guttering, marked wallpaper etc. The final straw for me was the toilet roll holder that had a radio on it. I mean, why would you?! And at $350 a week, it was expensive for what it was.
So we are now just on the outskirts of Glenview, you can't go much further out and still be in! I have always has reservations about city living - I just don't think I could cope with inner-city life, but this is really good. It takes 4 minutes to drive to work! We researched schools before deciding to move here - the primary school has a good reputation and a reasonable decile rating too and just as important, Melissa seems to be happy there. Hamilton has a smaller population than York but I bet it covers a bigger area as most houses are detached - there is an awful lot of green compared with British cities. I really think we have made a good choice coming here!
Beds - they seem to come in all sizes here: single; single queen; single king; double; queen; king. We opted for a complete bedroom set and the bed that came with it is a queen. Not helpful that I went out and bought new double sheets before packing up! Not to worry. It seems massive! I think Steve was in there with me somewhere but I never bumped into him so I can't confirm it. I felt like the princess and the pea (without the pea) last night - it is a tall bed with a very thick mattress with an extra overlay type affair on top of that. I will try not to fall out - it is a long way down and I may break a leg! Shona, can you imagine how comfy it will be when I have my electic blanket and mattress topper on there as well - I will be nearly on the ceiling! I will have to take provisions to make the long climb worthwhile. You can come and see it, maybe even touch it if you ask nicely. You are now green with envy, I can see it distorting the stratosphere from here!
I would like to take this opportunity to publicly embarrass my son Darren who has recently passed his driving test - WELL DONE SON! Enough ramblings, Karen B |
