The ups and downs of our planned new life to NZ, warts and all!

First OB apptMon 18 February 2008

Since leaving the job, I've felt generally better about life!  On Sunday, Steve and I took the girls to a local park and had a picnic.  Usually Sunday's I'm tense with dread for the following day, but it was nice to play and relax.  Although I fell asleep on the grass!  The pregnancy effects have not let off!  On Monday, I dropped Moons off at school and Pip and I walked the dog.  When I got home I made a dent in the washing and tidied the house.  Its great to do those little jobs around the house.  Steve drove me to my first appointment, but we decided he would wait in the car with the girls.  We've decided to go private because the state system here is much the same as the UK.  I called for a midwife back when I first discovered I was pregnant almost 7 weeks ago and they' ve still not got back to me.  I've always since preferred OB care since Mexico City.  I've had a lot of problems in both my pregnancies - so I don't want to take any chances.  The OB was awesome.  Really friendly, but professional.  She's reassured me that I won't go over my due date.  Something I've been really paranoid about after going two weeks past my due date with Pip.  She did my scan and we saw a healthy heartbeat.  Everything looks good and I'm so close to the second trimester I can almost taste it!  She also reassured me that if I get sicker she will sort me out immediately.  Unlike the state healthcare I had in Australia and was left losing stacks of weight, eventually vomiting blood from my stomach.  The sickness is just hovering in the manageable - normal pregnancy - stage at the moment.  I'm quite happy about that!  We're still considering a move to the SI.  Our timing is dreadful!  Steve made an enquiry about a job he saw online, spoke to the owner on Friday, saw the partner in Wellington this morning!  They're impressed with his education and background.  The next stage will involve the partner reporting back to the owner and then Steve flying down to Queenstown for a formal interview.  The salary is excellent and it would be a great opportunity for him.  He's also just found out he's getting a pay rise for his English job - the timing couldn't be better!  Just got to hope the Kiwi dollar drops against the pound a lot more to really feel the benefit.  We're really getting a bit panicky now as my salary stops.  But I have no regrets, and we're saving from all the food I was buying in town!  I guess when we moved here, we had this rather niave idea that things would be different.  In fact, its the same routine, same stresses and strong desire to live somewhere else more perfect!  I thought we'd avoid that mentality having travelled so much and having basically lived here before.  I like to believe that if we just keep trucking we will find what we're looking for.  We've probably hit the stage when  a lot of people give up and go home.  I miss home so much, but not enough to live there again.  I miss my best friends so much it aches.  I miss going to some of my favourite places.  I am at the stage where when I look back England is a beautiful garden without any of the annoying aspects that drove me to leave in the first place!

Well, my focus now is making it through each day with the pregnancy.  Steve and I have already dared to talk about names and car seat logistics!  It'll be great when we can involve Moons in the pregnancy.  At the moment she just thinks Mummy has a sore belly and is very poorly.  Bit disconcerting for her!
