The ups and downs of our planned new life to NZ, warts and all!

Bugger!Tue 27 March 2007
I'll have to keep this brief because I'm really sore.  So the other day, I wrote off our new car.  I was on my way to pick up a baby monitor that I had won on trademe.  Steve couldn't take me, it was the first time I had driven that car.  I had a map on the passenger seat, and Steve had clearly highlighted the directions for me.  I had Moons in the car with me, in her new toddler seat.  So I came off the motorway at Upper Harbour Highway, through the lights and then glanced down at the map to see how much longer I had to drive on this road, and then I looked up and saw the back of a car.  I braked, but I knew it was too late.  The impact was huge.  The front of the car crumpled.  Moonie screamed, and for a moment everything blacked out.  Then I tried to reassure Moonie, things raced through me head, turn off the ignition, move my feet to make sure my legs worked, reassure Moonie some more.  I didn't know what to do I was paralysed with fear.  Breathing hurt so much.  I didn't want to cry or scream because of Caitlin and I didn't want to risk passing out.  People stopped and one woman knelt beside me and talking gently to me, she became my focul point.  Someone took Caitlin and a few people checked her over and played with her.  She was fine, albeit shaken.  I asked someone to call my husband, and I wanted to make sure the woman in the car in front was OK.  She was fine, thank god.  Steve sounded sick when I spoke to him briefly, I had his wallet and had the baby, how the hell was he going to get to me.  I wanted the ambulance to hurry up because the pain was so bad.  When it arrived, they put a neck collor on me and helped onto a stretcher.  Everyone around was really, really nice.  They kept Moonie smiling and she was happy pointing out trucks and telling the crowd that it was a silly car!  In the ambulance, I just wanted to sleep, but I had to stay focused for Moons and keep chatting to her.  I had to have immediate neck x-rays to check for damage, fortunatly I was given the all clear.  My chest hurt so badly, there is bone sticking out and they think my sternum is broken and I have bruised ribs.  They wanted to keep me in hospital, but I rang Steve that night  to ask him to pick me up because I just wanted to be at home with my family.  The police are coming today to take a statememt, which I'm really nervous about.  The car is a write off, and we were insured so have to wait to see how much we are going to have to pay out.  My darling moonie is OK, she's pretty robust.  Its a dreadful start to our time in NZ, but I just want to get better so I can get on with things!  Everyone has been amazing, our landlady let Steve use her daughter's car, and today he's going to pick up furniture that we got on trademe.  I've got to go now because I'm so sore, what a bugger.
