Road trip to Vancouver - Day Five

Today was the day that everything we wanted to see and do had to be done in a day!

Our hotel was located on Howe Street across from the main mall (Pacific Centre) and we headed for the direction of Gastown.

We walked down West Hastings Street which had the high end designer shops, the picture above is Vancouver Lookout but we didn't bother to go up.

Gastown is the oldest part of the city.  The Gastown Steam Clock above sounds the Westminster Chimes and is located on the corner of Water and Cambie Street.  The Clock is powered by a steam engine, although it looks quite old it was built in 1977 as a tourist attraction and an advert for a local clock shop.

Not a very good statue I must admit but this is "Gassy Jack" his name was John Deighton.  He was a Canadian bar owner but born in Hull England.  He was know as Gassy Jack because he was quite talkative the name stook and the area became know as Gastown.

The area is also famous for where the Maple Tree once stood here, pioneers in 1885 chose the name Vancouver for the City in this very spot.

We headed off towards the train station and this is where the area got very uncomforable.  To get into China Town you have to cross over Hastings Street East, a very bad area in town.  Just looking down the street you could tell that you really needed to get the hell away from there.

There were lots of homeless people and the area is know for its drug dealers, looking at some of the people knocking around they looked high as kites.  My camera was packed away before hand so not to attract too much attention to us as we were warned not to go near the place by Neils co workers but in the bright lights of day at 10am I don't think we needed to worry too much.

Chinatown is just the next street along from the rough area of town so we were still wanting just to get the hell away from it, one quick photo and we headed off.

Vancouver Train Station

 Main Street Sky Train

This is the Olympic Village, 2010.

This is the great fish and chip shop we went to yesterday at Granville Island.

Neil's new car , yeah right.

A Roundabout, sorry traffic circle.

HR MacMillian Space Centre, Warning only go if you have children otherwise stay away it would be a waste of your time and money.

The famous Inukshuk

We walked through Stanley Park to get to the Aquarium

Stanley park is 1,000 acres, yes its very big!  Its very pretty as you walk through it, its 10% larger that New Yorks Central Park.  It has an estimated half million trees which can be as tall as 250ft.

Vancouver Aquarium a must see, do not miss it.  It cost $19.95 each to get in and was probally one of the best things we have seen so far on our trip.

Jellyfish

Apparently the worlds largest Jellyfish has reached 8 foot, and its tenticles can grow half the length of a football field.  You wouldn't want to be in the water with one of them would you?

Flipper

Finally when we got back to the hotel we were so tired, our feet were so sore we had walked around all of downtown Vancouver in one day!

We set of back for Edmonton tommorrow but we will be stopping over on the way again not so sure which way we are going yet but the blog entries are not finished, please check in tommorow.
