Bloody computers
We went shopping around yesterday for a computer as the hotel has is free wi fi. We looked around several stores and decided to get a reconditioned Acer with Linux. Neil's cousin back in England has the same one and runs Skype so we didn't think there would be any problems.
We were quite impressed with the little machine, I managed to get my e-mails and get on BE (the most important thing) but the issue came with Skype.
I downloaded it from the Skype website but I couldn't double click on the icon to open it. I tried for ages and also googled some info but still no joy. A very upset Cassie and Neil then decided to take it back to the shop where we got it from.
I won't name names but they are bloody useless and told me to contact Acer, I said to them "why can't I leave it here and you contact them and get it sorted for me"? Still no joy. We walked out that shop and went into one of the major stores in Alberta but they were clueless as well.
We then went into Best Buy and they tried to sort it out for us, he was trying for about an hour, bless him. It turns out that we should have a password for it. He tried to go through the back door and change it but he couldn't remember how to do it. The guy said without the password it is useless!
I will be marching back into the shop this morning to ether get the password so I can get this bloody machine to work Skype or I want a refund as the computer isn't working as it should be. Believe me it is more than there life is worth if they say no to both. I'll kick off BIG style.
Apart from that the machine is fine and I would like to keep it but without the webcam its no good to me.
Lets see how I go.
Check back later.
Well we went back to the shop in question and they were still as unhelpful as ever, we gave in and walked out in the end. We just weren't getting anywhere with it. They would only exchange and wouldn't give us a credit check or a refund. The guy was quite clueless. All I would say is if you have no idea how to use a Linux watch out because very few people do know how to use them. We felt like crap in the end because we have this other machine and we should have just gone with the XP version in the first place. Lessons have been learnt.
We ended up going to Best Buy and getting another Acer that runs Windows XP. We have decided that we will try to get the other one working on Skype some way or another. Dummies guide to Linux coming up.
Update 28th November
Well we went back into that bloody god forsaken shop we had gone back in and left the computer with them that previous night. I think we have been in that shop every single day since we got here. They managed to get Skype up and running and that is all we ever wanted. They also informed us of the password.
I must admit I just gave in in the end I just got sick of the whole situation. Its been hanging over us since we got here. Neil wanted to exchange it still for the XP version but I said I was happy with it. Never will my feet step one foot in their doors.
We have purchased a serivce protection from them and Neil also thinks that was a waste of money if they don't even know about how to use Linux.
We are going to put this all behind us now. |
