Car Boot Sale - Updated 14th July 2008

Well, the time has come and I have decided to get rid of some of our crap. (some should be changed to lots)

I was supposed to do the first car boot sale last week but because I went to a wedding on the Saturday night I had a better offer of having a good old sleep in with my husband on the Sunday morning.

There is no getting out of it this week (Sunday 6th July 2008). No wedding, no other form of party I have to do this car boot.

I spent most of last week sorting through all our crap and I am still gathering stuff now.  Why do we hold onto so much rubbish?  Old gift cards from when I was 18 and stupid teddies.

The other worst thing about going through stuff that you boxed because you thought you might need it some time in the future is:-

You look at the item and think 'oh god, I thought I got rid of that'  then you end up mounting a pile of things you want to keep still and that pile doesn't seem to get any smaller.

I have to be very very ruthless, most things will have to go.

Update 4th July 2008

Many thanks to Pharinha for explaining what a Car Boot Sale is in the comments section of this entry.

It never occured to me to explain the sad British tradition for the people that might not know what a Car Boot Sale is.  I have never done one before and I have only ever visted them a few times myself.

Update Monday 7th July 2008

Yesterday I did my Car Boot Sale.  I got up at 5am had breakfast and put on my make up and was outside waiting in the queue at the Auction Mart at 6:30am.  There was a fair few cars parked up and waiting when Neil and I got there and I was a bit worried that we wouldn't be able to get a space inside as the weather was wet, very wet.

When we got parked up it was a rush to get some stuff out the car and quickly get a space, as the man on the gate suggested when you hand over your money.  As you can imagine all the best spaces were gone and we ended up having four small spaces (inside) to fill up with all my crap. (which it all was)

Traders were only allowed in at the same time as the buyers so you are trying to set up and all these people gather around to see what you have.  Quite stessful, there are lots of questions fired at you and you are always looking out for if people are nicking anything.

Neil went home after it died down a bit as he had some work to do and he is also a follower of the Grand Prix.  I'm not sure if I am going to let him get out of next weeks Car Boot though.  The day started really fast and didn't slow until about 10:30am but as soon as it hit 1pm it started to wear off.  In fact people were packing up.

I was very surpised what sold and what didn't sell.  Lots of people wanted something for nothing as well which was very annoying as some of the stuff I sold was for a very cheap price.  I managed to sell about 30 floppy disks for £1 when a guy early on in the day told me to bin them as no one would want them.

Taking out my float and how much I paid to get in I made £96.25 out of stuff that would have gone to the charity shop.  I came home very tired and wondering if I really want to do another next week but I am sure I will end up doing another.  (what the hell).  Hopefully I will get there earlier and the English weather might be good to me.  Something tells me that I won't become a millionaire though.

Updated 14th July 2008

We did another Car Boot yesterday, and the sun was shining in fact Neil got sun burnt.

We had a pitch outside this time and it was quite good fun.  We made a grand total of £130 which is great and I never thought we would have managed that amount.

If anyone is wondering about doing a Car Boot and you have some half decent stuff, I say go ahead and do it.  We were going to send this stuff to a Charity shop and now we have a grand total of £226.25 to put towards a leaving party if we decide to go.  We still need to do some more Car Boots though.

Updates to follow.

car boot

Car boot sales are rife in Uk, but sadly almost non existent here in Portugal. You load all your no longer needed stuff in the car and cart it designated to a field. You pay the field owner to get in and set up a little table. You fill the little table with the stuff. Public then pay a smaller amount to enter field and search all the tables ( usually hundreds ) to find something they think they need and get it for a bargain. The field owner gets very rich, and junk owner might make a hundred or so. Now, you knew that already, didnt you ? Some very interesting stuff sometimes. I miss them.
