Teaching the In-laws

How to use the World Wide Web

Yesterday was Neil's parents first taster of how to use the internet, between them I thought they did pretty well.

Both Neil and I managed to get them to open icons, type in the web address, and search around.  The only problem is with the mouse.  I feel my MIL is slightly scared of the mouse and how to hold it.  It come with time so I am hoping to get them on as often as I can now before we go.

My MIL managed to send an e-mail which she has received a reply to so now I need to show her how to open it and read it.

I will have to make some notes for them but before we go I want to see them managing it without our help.  I love throwing people in the deep end, anyway its the best way to learn.  There was one or two times Neil wanted to take over but I told him "No" as they are never going to learn that way.

The only thing we didn't manage to do was show them Skype but hopefully tonight we will be able to.

Lets see how our teaching skills improve over the next few days

Scrap Yards and More Sorting

My Poor Car

Well yesterday I took my car along to a Scrap Yard.  It was a Green Ford Escort on an M reg so it was quite old and to be quite frank had seen its last day, and quite dangerous.  I would not have felt comfortable selling it on.

What was wrong with it, to be honest it would be quicker to tell you all what was right with it but anyway here goes:

When the lights were on a night and you wanted to indicate the high beam would come on.

The front and back windscreens would get condensation.

You couldn't open the door from the drivers side, sometimes it wouldn't even let me in!

It started to leak petrol.

So the poor car was bad.  I have been informed that it is going to be made into a nice metal square.  Sorry I have no pictures I was going to take one but I forgot.  Now here is the main bit of the news how much did the man at the scrap yard charge me? £45 yes you read that right fourty five bloody quid.

Nice was so shocked, he said "are you sure you want to do this".  To be honest with you what is a car of that age going to make.  It was quick and easy and its now gone.  Neil was saying "we should have taken out the car CD/radio" and "they are going to make so much from that car".  Well bully for them we don't have the time to be selling car radios etc do we.

Neil wants to give his car to one of his relatives or send it to a car auction.  I've told him don't have too much high expection if you send it to the auction he has an Audi A4 on a P reg.  We drove past an 03 reg A4 yesterday for £3,300 so his would be lucky to even make it past £400 at this moment in time.  Private car sales are being pushed down and people who can afford it are getting some good bargains.

I joked yesterday that it woud be really funny if he only got £50, five pounds more than mine.

More Sorting out Boxes

Well we have the container people coming out on Thursday/Friday to pack up all our things so I am going to have to go through everything again.  Pulling out any food items, candles or pine cones (Christmas Decorations).  Also making sure there is no mud on anything.

I hate going through thoses boxes, its a nightmare.  Keeping motivated is the key and pushing yourself.

Started making Lists

I think you have to get very organised, I thought I was quite organised but you have that many things to do.  Bits of paper all over the place, mobile phone going off, people wanting to see you for the last time.  All of a sudden there is not enough time in the day and there is no time for you to unwind.  I've started the lists and trying to tick off loads throughout the day, being a real trooper.

The lists help you with your own sanity and as soon as anything pops in that head of mine it is jotted down in my note book.  The important notebook.

Anyway nothing left to report, see you soon.

Webcams and Skype

Gone all Techno

As you can see I am now back online and back on BE for a short time (god how I have missed you)

On Saturday we purchased a webcam and a microphone for Neil's parents.  I couldn't wait to get back to their house to try it out, having not used one myself.

We had one of Neil's parents friends son (did you get all that) come and look at my compter as there was something wrong with Outlook.  The inlaws now have their own e-mail address.

I have also downloaded Skype onto the computer and created both accounts so they are up and running.  I was dying to try it out but one of Neil's relatives was away.  I made the test call to the Skype computer lady, though.

Later on in the day we tried it out with one of our friends in Calgary which really was what I wanted to do.  At least we know it is working across the pond.  However they were having problems with their microphone at their end but they could see and hear us.  Hopefully they don't mind trying again sometime before we go.

Isn't technology great, one click of a green button and you can talk to anyone in the world for FREE over the webcam. (I'm running the risk of sounding very old now)

Just type Skype in your search engine and I'm sure it will pop up, their are millions of users out there.

Well gotta go and sort out yet another long list of things to do, Bye. x x x
