Immigration Journal

The story of two people who emigrated from the UK to Ontario, Canada July 2006.

It is with great sadness

... we have to report the loss of all our baby robins. We are gutted, but I suppose that is nature. As I reported yesterday something (probably a raccoon) had attacked the nest and killed the mother and two of the babies. Unfortunately this morning the nest was one again on the ground, but no babies in sight.

We found evidence of raccoons on the deck (in the form of poo), so suspect that they are to blame. Not only do they have the audacity to eat our chicks then then s*** in our deck!

On a lighter note the baby raccoons (I know, ironic isn't it) came back last night with mum and we took some more photos of them. They are a menace, but so, so cute.

Anyone for a pile of raccoons?

Liked the turtle, not seen that type around here. We get painted (good) and snappers (bad) from time to time.

Gotta nip that shitting on the deck in the bud, or else it will just get worse and worse. We are in the bizarre situation of asking our neighbours for their dog shit in the hope that the smell of a predators poop will keep the racoons away from our deck. We have one shitting behind the BBQ, no matter how clean we keep it.

Critter Ridder had some sucess, and it was suggested that keeping the deck damp will discourage them, but right now we are resorting to using someone elses shit to stop the buggers crapping on the deck. Its probably Ironic, if it didnt stink and contain all sorts of nasty diseases.

The problem you will have is that as the cute babys grow bigger, they will be fighting for and and marking teritory. A couple of them probably wont make it to next year, but you could end up with 4 or 5 adult racoons hanging around where you used to have 2, and then the fun starts. Crapping on the deck could be the least of your problems. Rabies is pretty common among racoons, and their destructive nature is well documented. I'm a little worried about your attitude to the racooons, enjoy them while they are so cute, but encourage them at your peril.

Raccoons

Thanks for both comments. We allowed the babies in the garden long enough to take plenty of pictures, but we now discourage them with the hose pipe - they don't seem to like that.

They are very cute and it is hard not to love them, but like you say (IK) they are not to be encouraged. We have about six adult raccoon who visit and now this one has five babies and another female turned up yesterday with three. They also seem to have forgotten they are nocturnal and we have just shooed one away at 11.20am!

As adorable as they are, we are doing our best to keep them away. Also, the deck incident is the first time this has happened, hopefully it was just because it was sitting on the deck eating the robins and couldn't be bothered to move.
