Warm weather bring the insects!
What a week for wildlife we have had. It seems that this week of nice warm weather has woken everything up, including the insects unfortunately.
Every day this week we have had a dozen squirrels, several chipmunks, loads of red winged blackbirds, robins, starlings as well as a pair of Killdeer birds that are new ones to us. They are a water bird, but they decided to stay in our garden for a few hours the other day. They have two broad black bands across their white chests and apparently fake a broken wing to attract predators away from their nests.
We have also seen lots of grackles in the garden. They are beautiful birds with iridescent colours but can bully the other birds.
The squirrels are going frantic lately, chasing each other around then sitting in perfect harmony the next. This is apparently mating behaviour, so god knows how many babies we will get as we have at least a dozen adults in the garden.
As I mentioned the insects are also coming out. We have seen lots of paper wasps and bluebottles about. We are going to buy a mozzie trap this year so hopefully we will be able to enjoy the garden. Not sure if they attract wasps and other flies too?
When we get back from our spring break hubby is going to build an extension onto our rear deck and a pergola thing over the top that we may have to use to hang insect netting if the mozzie thing doesn’t work. I have been looking at plants and seeds etc, so may get my green fingers out later.
I am actually looking forward to doing the garden as when we bought the house the garden was rather neglected. The previous owners seemed to have the pool at that was it. As we have got rid of the pool, we want to make the garden prettier and more floral, so lots to spend on shrubs etc. The trouble is the garden is so big, we will only be able to do the section round the house as it will cost too much to do the lot. Fortunately a lot of it is woodland, so I might sprinkle some wildflower seeds around and see what comes up.
Yesterday it was 18C, the warmest day so far this year, things are looking up!

Cute pics, especially the squirel. Check out dbds blog for an even cuter one of his cat sitting in the feeder waiting for lunch:)
Our skeeter vac doesnt attract wasps, but a fair number of flies get stuck to it. Could just be because of the large number of flies around due to the cow pasture behind us though.

Four rockets struck strongholds of the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon on Sunday, highlighting fears of sectarian tensions in the country that seem to mirror the strife in the Syrian civil war.The first two struck a predominately Shiite Beirut suburb of Dahiye, Lebanon's state news agency reported. One of the rockets injured five people, including three Syrians, the National News Agency reported. The number of casualties from the second one was not immediately known. Two more rockets pounded a residential area in the northern city of al-Hermel, also a Shiite neighborhood, causing property damage, NNA reported.Syrian rebels have shelled al-Hermel in the past, saying they are responding to military support of the Syrian regime by Hezbollah, which is a Shiite militia.Authorities have not identified any suspects in Sunday's attacks.Concerns that sectarian strife in Syria may trigger ethnic conflict within Lebanon's borders escalated Saturday, when Hezbollah declared it is going to war in Syria on behalf of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.Lebanon's caretaker interior minister reflected the anxiety when he visited the site of Sunday's attack, which he called "an act of sabotage to create tensions.""God willing, the events in Syria will not spill over into Lebanon, and we hope that we will have more men with more reason because we just went over 40 years of civil war," Marwan Charbel told NNA.At the same time, he emphasized that he does not know who is to blame for the attack.Like Syria, Lebanon's population is divided into religious and ethnic factions, some bitterly at odds with each other.Hezbollah is one of the largest and best armed factions. It draws most of its foreign support from Shiite-dominated Iran and from the al-Assad government in Syria, which the U.S. accuses of acting as a conduit for Tehran's weapons deliveriesHis fighters have participated unofficially in towns close to Lebanon's borderalongside Syrian government troops in battles against al-Assad's opponents. On Saturday, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah promised al-Assad victory with Hezbollah's help.Nasrallah also called for his opponents in Lebanon to fight against Hezbollah on Syrian soil, hoping to divert armed conflict away from Lebanon and into the active battle field next door."We are fighting in Syria, so let us fight there instead and deflect Lebanon from the conflict, the fighting, the confrontations and the bloodshed," he said.Charbel acknowledged the dangerous potential in Lebanon's rising tensions."We are now living in an intolerable environment."Hezbollah leader acknowledges fighters' presence in Syria town
