Immigration Journal

The story of two people who emigrated from the UK to Ontario, Canada July 2006.

We are going on a spring holiday!

This week we decided we needed a holiday. We haven’t had one for about 18 months and really need a break. We spent hours pouring over a map of North America trying to decide where to go. We didn’t want to fly anywhere, so we wanted somewhere we could drive to.

Whenever we have travelled to North America before we always go to several different places and drive a couple of thousand miles. For several years we have been thinking of going to Nashville and Memphis, so decided to make these our main destination. We then worked out a route that would take us to them and back again.

In the end we are going via a route though Indianapolis, St Louis, Memphis, Nashville and Cincinnati, around 2,300 miles in total. I am lucky in that through my job back in the UK I used to travel a lot and built up a lot of hotel points with various chains, so we will be using these for most of the trip. This means it will be quite a cheap trip. We will go next month, so we are quite excited about it.

I am now looking at places to go and things to do whilst we are at each place. I have booked a night at the Grand Old Opry in Nashville already. Well, you cannot go to Nashville without going to the Opry! Obviously we will go to Graceland and Sun Studios in Memphis. I am a big Elvis fan, so this will be great although I’m not sure hubby is as enthused!! Just looking at other things to do now.

We have also been speaking to my stepdaughter who came out before Christmas. She and her friend want to come out to Canada again in the summer, so we have been looking at flight costs etc. They were unemployed when they came out before so we paid for their flights, but this time they are employed, so will pay for themselves. At least at that time of year there will be plenty of places to visit.

I’m off now to look at the tourism website for the places we are going – I love organising holidays!
