Immigration Journal
The story of two people who emigrated from the UK to Ontario, Canada July 2006.
Caught red handed
We popped over to Kingston today and finally found a supermarket that we could get most of our stuff from – Loblaws.
So far we have been getting a few bits from one place, some more from another and we could not seem to find a supermarket that we could get everything from like we could in the UK.
Whilst we were in Kingston we popped into Loblaws on the way home just to see what it was like. Yahoo, it was a bit like Waitrose. We managed to get lots of stuff and spent a fortune. They have a very good selection of fruit and veg and lots of fresh meat all of which seems to be hard to find in most other supermarkets.
When we got home, I cooked dinner and whilst I was waiting for the meat to cook, I sat and looked out the window into the garden. I was happily watching the birds when suddenly they all flew off and in trotted a family of racoons, five in all.
They ran up to the tree and began raiding the bird feeders. I called hubby and he got his camera and took some pictures. Go to my photo album link on the right and see the racoon pics. It was starting to get dark, so some are not so good.
Now we know who is eating all the food we leave out for the birds. Trouble is they are sooooo cute!

Great pictures, loved that first one:) Cute, but destructive unfortunately, and one of the mre common sources of disease.
My boss recons a .22 over a 12 gauge. Wont do as much damage to the feeders. Try sprinkling som Critter Didder all around the feeder area, and if that doesnt work there is the peanut butter trick.
Supermarkets...Have you tried the Dewes "My Independent", on Dundas East (Hwy 2) a bit further out than the hospital? Its a lot like Loblaws (given that its the same group).
Not the cheapest store in Town, but has the best selection. Mostly I shop at No Frills, its the cheapest store and has the same loblaws brands, although I cant say I particularly enjoy paking my own stuff again, you get used to stuff getting bagged for you.
No Frills meat and veg isnt always the best. For better quality fresh veg and meat I go to the local IGA and get it fresh...I like to support our local store anyway as I would miss it if it was to close. Its too expensive though for "the weekly shop"
For a real greengrocer and butcher there is that place over on Bell (along past the mall aways), west past Sydney, by the North Country Buffet, but I cant vouch for it as I've not shopped there.

I have just brought myself up to date with your blog.
It's really good to hear your experience of setting up home in Canada including the endless shopping and all the snags that happen along the way.
It gives a realistic and practical view for all those of us still to make the one way trip.
Keep us informed of your progress I really enjoy it.

For Penny
Hi Penny
Thanks for your comments. It is nice to know that our experiences can help others.
I find it very theraputic writing my blog and it will be a nice thing to look back on in a few years time, when hopefully we will consider ourselves true Canadians.
