I look forward to seeing you there. Jane Not sure I can stand this heatWe can now add another animal to our list of garden critters, a woodchuck or groundhog as they are also known. We saw one last year in a neighbour’s garden just fleetingly, but today we have seen him twice helping himself to the birdseed which drops on the floor round one of our trees. We managed to get a quick photo of him before he darted off. We also have some baby rabbits/hares in the garden, which are really cute.![]() ![]() We had to have our truck serviced on Friday and the bill was extortionate - $45. Honesty I don’t think a garage in the UK would even look at a car for that sort of money let alone service it. I know it was one of the smaller services (30,000km) but still. It is really hot here at the moment and has been for several weeks. We had a few cooler days (low 20’sC) last week but mainly it has been in the high 20’s. Today we got 34C which is really too hot and the weather man suggested with the humidex it felt like the low 40’s which I can well believe. The heat is even wearing the squirrels out and they can be found flaked out in the trees and on the seed boxes, they are so funny. ![]() ![]() ![]() We have been successfully keeping the growing number of raccoons at bay. So far we have noted two different mothers with five babies each and another with three. They are totally adorable, but they keep coming out in the day and they literally take over the feeding stations in the garden, which means the squirrels, and chipmunks are frightened off. Hubby has devised a plan that involves using the hosepipe to flush them out of the garden. For some reason they are quite happy to sit out in the rain and eat, but don’t like to be hosed. We don’t care if they come around at night and finish off the leftover food, but to steal it from our “regulars” during the day is just not on. Great news from SpainMy aunt and uncle who live in Spain (emigrated a couple of years ago from UK) are finally coming over to Canada to visit us.Their flights are booked for April, so we hope the weather will not be too bad as they don’t like the cold and positively hate the snow. If this year is anything to go by, they should be ok. We booked the flights with Zoom using the discount code from Muchmor (MM2007ZA), which saved over £130 on the booking, excellent news. We are really looking forward to seeing them as apart from speaking on the phone and seeing each other via webcams we haven’t actually seen them physically since October 2005 when we went to Spain for a long weekend. It will be their first trip to North America and they want to visit Niagara Falls and stay there a couple of nights and if possible spend a couple of nights in New York. Obviously some of this relies on the weather as north New York state suffered from appalling snow storms in March/April this year. My uncle has dreams of renting a Mustang and driving round – however I’m not sure they will be able to afford that unless one of us wins the lottery between now and then! Look what we just saw in the gardenAt first we thought we were seeing things, but no, it was a turtle. No idea what it was doing in our garden as there is no water. He just wandered in, stayed for a photo shoot and wandered off again. You don't tend to get these in England!I looked him up and he appears to be a Blanding's turtle. ![]() Up close and personal
It is with great sadness... we have to report the loss of all our baby robins. We are gutted, but I suppose that is nature. As I reported yesterday something (probably a raccoon) had attacked the nest and killed the mother and two of the babies. Unfortunately this morning the nest was one again on the ground, but no babies in sight. We found evidence of raccoons on the deck (in the form of poo), so suspect that they are to blame. Not only do they have the audacity to eat our chicks then then s*** in our deck! On a lighter note the baby raccoons (I know, ironic isn't it) came back last night with mum and we took some more photos of them. They are a menace, but so, so cute. ![]() Anyone for a pile of raccoons? ![]()
