Well, here I am, 5 days away from returning to England....Nervous, I always am, why? I have no idea....Is it to do with getting back into the U.S? Maybe, after all, I have heard several scary stories about people who have trouble passing through immigration.......Since 9-11 American has become obsessed with security, not actually the American walking the street, but those Americans keeping us safe!
Put that along side getting through Heathrow..... Why is it, that after you land, your faced with at least a mile walk to the immigration hall? Yes, I know, the excercise will do me good after sitting on a plane for 8 or 9 hours and yes, I could do with loosing a few pounds or is that kilo's? They still had pounds when I left Blighty!
Maybe the nerves are there because I wonder if I will still remember which side of the road to drive on? Which seems odd having been a driver for 28 years before I left for the U.S.A. Or maybe it's just simple things like using a credit card, last time I was there, I bought some toys for my Grandchildren, got to the checkout and gave over my card then I was told to "input" my number.....What number says I? Your pin number I'm told, don't have one I say, too bad she says, can't buy toys!
Maybe it's the lack of places to eat in England? I don't want to sit in a "pub/restaurant" and eat.... I prefer "Lone Star Steak house" type places, full of friendly people who want to serve you, not some slouch who wouldn't know good service if it hit he/she in the face....Waiters/waitresses who are pleased to serve, because they get more tips that way..... I have tried a number or times to explain to my English family/friends that having someone who serves you well, you tip well, as opposed to having someone who would never see any tip even if you left one, is far better....They still don't get it!
Then there's the relaxed way of life here in Kansas.....I'm staying with friends in the U.K. and am always amazed at how "correct" every one feels they should be.....Can't you just except that we don't need to dress up, just for grilling flat hamburgers (with no meat!) small sausages and poor impersinations of chicken if ever I have seen one!
My English family and friends still iron clothes.....Even socks and pants (English sense) why can't you dry them, then fold them and put in your draw?
Oh well............ I'm still looking forward to the trip!!!
Enjoy people..........We will and we do!
