France has again beaten Spain to the top European spot and destination
of choice for Britons leaving the UK to live permanently abroad. Some
18,000 Britons are estimated to have moved to France during 2010, nearly
a third more than moved to Spain, according to data released this month
by the UK National Statistics office.

Today, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström,
launched the 'EU Immigration Portal', a website with hands-on
information for foreign nationals interested in moving to the EU. The
site, ec.europa.eu/immigration , is also directed at migrants who are
already here and would like to move from one Member State to another. It
provides specific information for each category of migrants about
migration procedures in all 27 Member States.

The seasonally adjusted Australian unemployment rate was 5.2 per cent in
October, as announced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
today. The ABS reported the number of people employed increased by 10,100 to
11,462,300 in October. The increase in employment was driven by an
increase in full-time employment, up 20,000 people to 8,067,500, and was
offset by a decrease in part-time employment, down 9,900 people to
3,394,800.

Australian life expectancy for both males and females continues to be
amongst the highest in the world, according to the Australian Bureau of
Statistics (ABS). A boy born today can expect to live an average of 79.5 years, while a
girl can expect to live to 84.0 years. Having survived to age 60, men
could expect to live another 23 years and women another 26 years.

disappointment. This is the message being relayed by clan expert, Rodger
Moffet, who is warning that the miss-selling of clan merchandise is
damaging the Scottish economy and putting clan merchandising jobs at
risk. Mr. Moffet, CEO of ScotClans, the ‘guardians of clan heritage’ on the
internet, is warning that there are tough times ahead for traditional
‘clan’ businesses unless something is done, and quickly.

Recent enquiries received by Foreign Office staff in Spain include a
request for Phil Collins’ telephone number, whilst a man asked staff to
contact his dominatrix after she had left him stranded at the airport. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is today reminding British
travellers of the role of its global network of Embassies, High
Commissions and Consulates as staff continue to be approached for
weather forecasts and ticket bookings.
