British Government Announces Inspections for British Schools Abroad Print E-mail

ImageThe British Government has today announced a new system of inspections for British International Schools. Speaking at a conference of international school teachers in Madrid, run by the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), a DCSF spokesperson read out a letter from Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, Diana Johnson MP, outlining the plans. The new inspection system will distinguish between schools that are upholding the rigour and excellence of British education and those that are simply trading on the ‘British School’ brand.

ImageForces sweethearts from yesterday and today joined hands to launch the 2009 Poppy Appeal in support of the Afghan generation of Armed Forces wounded and bereaved. Dame Vera Lynn, the original Second World War Forces sweetheart who is once again at the top of the British charts, was joined by Kiwi songbird Hayley Westenra in launching the Poppy Appeal with a fundraising goal of £31 million

Expat Brits Risk Losing Their Say at General Election Print E-mail

ImageThere are more than 5 million British citizens living abroad, but only a few thousand of them have registered to vote in the upcoming UK general election. British citizens living abroad can register as overseas voters if they have been registered to vote in the UK at any time within the past 15 years. Yet of the estimated 5.5 million British citizens living abroad, less than 13,000 overseas voters are currently on a UK electoral register.

An alleged racket involving a migration agent supplying false documents to support visa applications has been uncovered in a multi-agency operation in New South Wales, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, said today.

Staffed entirely by volunteers, CBS telephone listeners are extensively trained to be with people through their suffering.
